If you’ve been managing a homebrew setup on your Nintendo Switch, chances are you’ve used Tinfoil. For years, it was the go-to manager for backup libraries, index shops, and titles. However, many users have grown tired of its heavy footprint, occasional instability, complex UI, or regional language configuration bugs.

But the biggest problem? Tinfoil has not been actively updated for a long time. As Nintendo rolls out newer system firmwares and the Atmosphère custom firmware evolves, relying on an abandoned, closed-source installer means constantly wrestling with crashes, broken features, and looking for unofficial community patches just to keep it running.

Enter Cyberfoil — a fast, modern, and lightweight open-source alternative built specifically to address these pain points. Because it is actively developed, it strips away the legacy bloat while offering native compatibility with modern Switch firmware and the network protocols you already use.

In this guide, we will walk you through transitioning from the outdated Tinfoil environment to Cyberfoil, and how to configure it seamlessly using the OpenNX cyberfoil.json setup.

Moving to Cyberfoil: The Step-by-Step Transition

Switching over is straightforward because Cyberfoil handles your existing repository connections natively. You don’t even need to completely delete Tinfoil right away if you prefer to test them side-by-side.

Step 1: Download and Install Cyberfoil

Instead of dealing with full pack reinstallations just to update your tools, you can install and update Cyberfoil independently to preserve your main settings.

  1. Head over to the Official Cyberfoil GitHub Releases Page.
  2. Download the latest cyberfoil.nro file.
  3. Insert your Switch’s SD card into your computer (or use an FTP/DBI MTP responder tool).
  4. Drop the cyberfoil.nro file directly into your sdmc:/switch/ folder.

Step 2: Launching Cyberfoil (via HBMenu or Sphaira)

To open Cyberfoil, you can use the classic Homebrew Menu, or you can take advantage of the increasingly popular, modern Sphaira environment.

If you are using Sphaira as your main homebrew launcher interface, it will automatically detect the application file. Simply navigate to your main homebrew dashboard list within Sphaira, locate the Cyberfoil icon, and select it to launch.

Step 3: Configuring Your Shop Repositories

Cyberfoil reads clean JSON index configurations rather than traditional, bloated index URLs. Below are the setup steps for the major index sources supported by the Cyberfoil ecosystem.

To begin adding any shop, navigate to the setup interface first:

  • On the Cyberfoil homepage, select the Settings gear tile.
  • Press L or R to open the Remote (or Shop) tab on the sidebar.
  • Select Add new shop.

Option A: The Public OpenNX Forwarder

  1. Set the Protocol to HTTPS.
  2. Set the Port to Use default (443).
  3. Input the server details:
    • Host: opennx.github.io
    • Path: /cyberfoil.json
    • Title: Open NX (Leave Username and Password completely blank).
  4. Enable Tinfoil Mode (legacy shop compatibility) by checking the box before exiting.

Option B: Magic Monkei Private Server

Registration:

  1. Before configuring your console, go to the Magic Monkei Registration Portal to set up your account.
  2. Complete the registration steps to generate your unique Tinfoil/Cyberfoil credentials.

Console Setup:

  1. Enter the shop name: Magic Monkei, then press OK.
  2. Select Protocol HTTPS.
  3. Fill in the host: cyberfoil.magicmonkei.com, then press OK.
  4. Press to use the default port 443 — Use default (443).
  5. Fill in your private username from your Magic Monkei Dashboard, then press OK.
  6. Fill in your private password from your Magic Monkei Dashboard, then press OK.
  7. Confirm to add the shop to your favorites — Yes.

Option C: Pixel Goblin Private Server

Registration:

  1. Before setting up your console, visit the Pixel Goblin Sign-up Page to secure your active community access.
  2. Note down the specialized Username and Password credentials assigned to your profile.

Console Setup:

  1. Enter the shop name: Pixel Goblin, then press OK.
  2. Select Protocol HTTPS.
  3. Fill in the server details:
    • Host: pixelgoblin.link
    • Port: 443
    • Path: /api/shop
  4. Enter your unique Username and Password from your private Pixel Goblin Registration Fields.
  5. Confirm. Pixel Goblin will now appear in your active shop list.

Step 4: Refresh and Browse Your Library

Once your chosen network paths are locked in:

  1. Press B to back out and save your settings, then Restart Cyberfoil (or trigger a manual refresh from the application UI).
  2. Select the Install from eShop tile on your main menu. Your game lists, active updates, and library titles will instantly populate on the screen, ready for a smoother, faster experience.

Verifying Repositories & Uptime Troubleshooting

Because the underlying libraries and indices shift over time, you can actively inspect current configurations or find alternative public configurations like Magic Monkei or Pixel Goblin by visiting the main hub at the OpenNX Index Forwarder Portal.

If your library screen fails to populate after entering the configuration steps above, it is rarely a problem with Cyberfoil itself. Instead, the backend endpoint or index host might be undergoing scheduled data syncs or suffering an unexpected downtime window. Before tearing your system configurations apart, always check the operational status of the index mirrors using the live tracker dashboard over at the Tinfoil Shops Status Dashboard.

If a repository is listed as green/operational there but shows blank on your screen, double-check that your console clock is synchronized via internet servers in your Switch System Settings.
